Sam Cracks' Junior Clubman
words and photos - Phil Northeast
The top Junior Clubman drivers made
their way to the Southern Tasmania Kart Club's Orielton circuit for the 2005 Advanced
Petroleum Junior Clubman Feature event yesterday, August 14.
The club conducted a media promotion in conjunction with Advanced Petroleum and
the independently owned outlets, their BP fuel and lubricants, including free tickets
to the race day on Sunday.
The youngsters did not disappoint the crowd as they put on a great display of
close racing all day. Sam Crack (Bartercard, Mega Signs, Gyrotune) had the
edge in the heats and earned pole position for the final. Jackson Evans
(Labour Exchange, Evans Engines) joined Crack on the front row with an
impressive effort in Evans' Junior Clubman debut.
When the lights went green Crack jumped away while Evans got hung out to
dry and lost several positions. Jamie Bricknell (Precision Autos, Pro Karting Engines)
and Luke Sapwell (AM Calvert Earthmoving, CRG Racing, Gyrotuned Race Engines,
Australian Go Kart Spares) settled in to a race long attempt to bridge the small
gap to Crack. Once the race settled into a rhythm the chasing couldn't get any
closer and Crack could not increase his lead. In the end Sapwell gave up the chase
for the lead and started racing Bricknell and he made a neat move into the top
of the esses to gain second place. Naturally this compromised both their lines
onto the back straight allowing a recovering Evans to get tantalisingly close
to the battle for a podium position.
